Well, that’s very anthropocentric, and projecting our current level of consciousness upon ETs which we assume will be like “us" (our own nature, whatever that means). Like I said, our current technology barely enables us to send a few people to die in Mars. You might see that as a technological problem, I see it as a problem of level of consciousness. Believing in a monotheist God prevents technological development since there is little motivation for discovering new technologies. That’s not what will help you get to Paradise. Believing in materialist science is an obstacle in our current technological development. The belief that the Universe is just a dumb machine is what prevents us to move forward. I’ll sum up my views with the current comparison: thinking that ETs will be hostile is like a baby in the womb, wondering where are all the other “beings” that ressemble him, and thinking that these beings most be hiding because they are scared that the baby will try to occupy their own womb (planet) and confiscate their resources (steal the amniotic fluid and umbilical cord). It’s just a dumb assumption based on ignorance. Once a baby is outside the womb, what appeared as scarcity and lack of resources (check what happens towards the end of pregnancy) transforms into abundance and access to infinite energy (the air you breathe). Right now, if we were to encounter ETs, given our level of development, it would be similar to different organs of a baby being born before they formed a global organism and the brain was negotiating with the gynecologist for exclusive technology transfers, the stomach negotiating with the mother for exclusive access to resources (milk)… a ridiculous situation to say the least. Until we recognise that we are part of a single global “being” of which we are but cells, we can keep looking for ETs. It’s as futile as a baby looking for other “beings" like itself while still inside the womb. You can check Holon philosophy if you want to dig a bit deeper.. ;-)
