I would question the arguments made about extra terrestrials and their hostile nature.

I think in the contrary, the fact that a race has mastered inter galactic travel proves that they are a peaceful race. The reason is very simple: the level of scientific and technological development necessary to travel long distances at very fast speed also allows the development of weapons which could destroy their entire civilization. If you look at us, we developed nuclear weapons pretty much at the same time as we developed rocket technology allowing us to leave our planet. And there are many other obstacles that extra terrestrials will face which are similar to ours, like scarcity of natural resources, etc. The only way to overcome these is to become a deeply peaceful race. Any war would mean extinction.

Now, obviously, this doesn’t explain the “silence” from extra terrestrials. I think the silence is simply due to the fact that we don’t understand the universe and who we are yet. We think we know, but we really don’t.
